Building height for substrate

I want to have some various elevated spots in my substrate but don't know if I should just build it up with the substrate itself. I am planning on using Seachem Flourite and Seachem Sand, either in layers or mixed together. I am also building features for my fish to explore out of small Lava Rock and use silicon to get the desired shape. Can I use the Lava Rock under the Seachem to acive the elevations I want?

I would use some sort of coarser gravel like you said a lava rock. It will help from forming gas build up in the substrate.
I used the full ADA substrate system and it worked great but you can definitely use lava rock.
