A bubble counter is a container of fluid that the CO2 bubbles though so you can count how many bubbles you are getting per second or minute.

Enough CO2 to get to 30 ppm. I try and never give bubble rates. Every tank is different.

And IMHO a bubble counter/gas separator is necessary for DIY CO2.

I concur with Rex. You'll need it for DIY. I did it without one for a while and what a mess. There was always this slime buildup on my ladder/diffuser. And the bubble count is not all that relevant, since it'll fluctuate over time with DIY. If I were you, I'd get a drop checker. I just ordered two from Blacksunshine here.
