Brown dust- algae?

1828 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  anastasisariel
So when ever I stir my laterite gravel it kicks up a lot of rust colored dust. There is also a coating of the same on the anubias leaves. This stuff also sits on narrow leaved plants, it sticks on to the leaves. Seems like it maybe usurping the plants light space preventing their photosynthesis. So the same stuff is present as dust in the gravel, a thin brown coat on the anubias that can be rubbed off and as smaller specs on the rotala. It makes the rotala look ugly because the leaves have these things on them so they don't look a full green or yellow. I want to see their natural colors. Please help :)

How long has the aquarium been setup? Sounds like it could me diatom algae.

What they said  I've had the same issue recently in my new tank that's just recently setup. I got some Oto Cats to help but it clears itself up over time as the tank becomes more established from what I've been able to gather.

Hello! Sorry about the late reply to both of you'll I'm preparing for some exams on the side. Okay so isn't diatom algae the brown patches on your glass? The tank is 5 months old. But I've over fed sometimes and I also have no snail! :( That could be one cause. But enough speculating, I've attached a picture of the culprit, hope someone can id this pest, ruins the aesthetics ! :I

Does it appear to be little tufts of hair or fine strands? If so my guess is on black beard algae.
oh wow...that looks nothing like my tank with diatom issues
When I first seen the post title I was ready to write "diatoms". Then I seen your picture... I have no idea what that is, honestly. Another pic?
