Hey guys. So I want to Share and hear comments of your BN Pleco and have you ever had one in a dirted tank?

I have a 6 Year old BN Who I am very loyal too. he has never had another pleco to socialize with and he is about 7" in size. anyway I have had my pleco in Dirted tanks capped with sand. I have come to learn that He will not dig in the substrate as long as their is no place for him to hide, He does have his own driftwood, that has really turned to cork and won't sink. but it has a funnel like hole that he can squeeze into and he loves that piece of wood. but every now and then he does go and dig under other pieces of driftwood sometimes to hide or to have a new home. but he is pretty loyal to his own floating log. He has in the past in other tanks dug to the soil level of a dirted tank but he has never destroyed a dirted substrate, it's normally localized. But I have noticed that he doesn't dig more then 1.5"-2" into the substrate, And like i said it is always around a piece of driftwood for clearing a new home or hiding spot.

So what about you guys, any of you guys had bristlenose plecos in a Dirted tank? and how big of a mess did your pleco create or how good has it been. do you have more then one in a dirted tank? And what type of substrate do you have capped over your dirt?

I figured anyone wanting or considering doing a Dirt tank, that maybe have a BN pleco we can help them out to decide if they want to keep them in a dirted tank or not.

A cheap source of caves are those ceramic things you stick in flower pots and fill with water to slowly drain into the soil.
They are already the right shape and size and the ceramic and glazing is tank safe. I just made caves by placing rocks to form natural caves over the river sand substrate I use.

Here is one of mine.

My Bn used to dig like mad I got a cheap cave on Ebay. Cost about $12. He moved straight in and shortly after the female laid eggs

Heres my BN guarding eggs.

I have a BN pleco in a dirt tank capped with sand. He was good till I put a new piece of wood in.. his favourite hideout and he decided to try making his cave bigger. Dug right to the dirt and made a total mess twice. Took the tank all weekend to clear back up. But he hasn't tried doing it again that was a couple months ago. Now I barely see him because his cave hides him a little too well lol
Always easy to find my albinos.
Yeah If it wasn't for that floating piece of driftwood I have, I think mine would make a mess of my dirted tanks. At least I get to see him even if he think he is hiding. But I am about to do a complete tear down of my 240g so I haven't decided yet if he will go back into the tank or into another tank I have in the works...
