So my question is is it cool to bring rocks in your checked bag across the border mexico to houston

Anyone have recent experience with this. Is it cool or could I get screwed

They change the laws all the time. As long as you declare it and the stuff isn't "WET" or doesn't resemble some artifact..... Customs may run the material through a scanner to make sure you're not hiding something inside & let you go through.

Do you mind uploading a few pictures of the pieces you plan on bringing back in case it gets confiscated?

Well to answer my question
Yes you can...

Well I dunno if you can but I did
Had them in my checked bag packed like this

I did notice they went through my bag cause all my stuff was all jumbled and disorganized
But I did make it home with no hassle
So I guess it is ok

Here's a pic of them

I'm a bit late to this, so I'm glad you got your stones back fine.

I've been on a few geology and biology trips that crossed borders, and generally I think rocks were usually fine (the bigger issue was whether we could collect them from the sites or not). Sometimes their are issues with soil and water samples, so it would probably be a good idea to give the rocks a quick cleaning if they are dirty.

Same thing with plants, sometimes we could take bare-root specimens in okay, but that's a lot more of an issue.

It probably also helped that we were traveling with at least a couple PhDs doing fairly specific research, and sometimes they even had papers and permits and such.

I think in general, as long as you declare it, you probably won't get in trouble, but might get it confiscated. I'm not certain, and not a lawyer, so don't take my word on it.

That sounds like fun!!

Ya they were pretty dirty so they are actually soaking in a bucket of water right now

I didn't even declare them
They did ask if I had any plants or fruit though
But not rocks!
