Bringing plants cross-border? Good or bad?

I'm from Toronto. My friends and I are going on a trip to NYC.

I'm hoping to hit up the NYC stores recommended on this forum during my trip, and possibly buying some equipment / plants. Do you think there'll be any problems at the border with live plants? I know plants can probably survive at least a week since they're mailed all the time. Any thoughts?

I have this feeling the border patrol will think I'm carrying weed (marijuana) or something, since it'll be a bunch of college students.

Why not just mail them to yourself and be on the safe side.
