Brand new to Shrimping...

Was looking for a place with shrimp information and possibly where to buy some... I am greatly appreciative to all the information I have already found here.

I "had" a 49 gallon corner hex aquarium for 20+ years (yes, it was that old) and opted to not risk it's age and wanted to really try something new.

I picked up a nice Fluval Spec with the 7500W LEDs.

My wife loved the look of colored glass slag (green and blue) in the tank and I was wondering if it poses any issues with shrimp?

Some of the edges are quite sharp but not in a direct current in the aquarium...

Also, if you have suggestion for where I should start with Shrimp (Types? Amount? any suggestions?)... Aquarium has been running for about 5 days now, I have Micro Swords (not planted yet, just in it's pot) and some other plant that my wife saw and wanted...

I would do Neocaridina or Cherry Shrimp. Many Many beautiful colors and very hardy. I would also get some moss and maybe a java fern or anubias. They really like plants and things like that. Try looking up Dream Blue Shrimp or Painted Fire Red Shrimp just to name a couple. 10 would be a good amount if your interested in breeding them. Water parameters, ph 6.2-7.8 kh 2-4 Gh 6-8 tds less than 300 preferably but people can keep them in 600+ on occasions. You probably know about cycling and stuff like that too. They love alder cones and Indian Almond leaves. Moss balls are good too. Sorry if that's a lot of info but just trying to cover everything! Let me know if you have any questions!

Love the information... most of the times, when you go to a shop or look for stuff, the one item you know is not there and you are kinda forced to get what they have... with all those suggestions, i will have a broader range of possibilities... Thanks.

One thing to note is that a micro sword is a pain to grow. It will most likely not carpet in these conditions, especially with the stock fluval light and no co2. I would recommend getting some moss and Marino balls for your tank. They're low maintenance and shrimp love them

Wife does not care for the look of moss balls

Can they be cut in half?
I saw some images of of moss... see attached below... The Mrs. liked the look of they type of moss.

I think that might be flame moss. Another easy type is java moss although it looks a little different than that. Moss balls can most definitely be cut in half! That's how you get more of them. You can cut them any shape or size and they will grow. Just keep in mind that they take along time to grow. 2-3 inches is about 10-15 years of growth.

Moss balls are not even worth trying to grow... not even 1 bit and never heard of anyone doing this either. Yes you can cut them but your better off just getting the moss you like and going that route. Personally I like flame, Christmas and weeping mosses. You can attach them to pots, rocks, mesh or wood with crazy glue or tie them with string until they attach (I prefer glue) or just leave it floating around the tank.

Marimo balls are not moss, they are algae a well cared for Marimo can live over 100 years.

I will always refer to these things as moss balls, its incorrect but they will always be moss balls to me. :smile2:

Thanks for the picture.

Again, I don't mind them, but moss balls (even if they are not moss) is not something the wife is in the mod for looking at... LOL.

Going down the shrimp route, they are rather sensitive to water parameters, so make sure the tank is cycled, and established. They tend to feed not just on the food you put in the tank, but also graze on all the surfaces in the tank (glass, ornaments, plants, etc) and the longer the tank has been established the more goodies have the chance to establish that the shrimp can munch on

Even if they are an eye sore they do help filter the water pretty well. Maybe stick a couple in the filter if you don't want them in the tank
