I just got a couple of bolivian rams the other day and I was wondering if any of you out there have any advise on how to get them to color up properly.

Thanks

Feed em! :hihi:

What temp are you keeping the tank?

How old (how big) are they?
soft acidic water will go a long ways. They're not super colorful when they aren't breeding.

Tank temp is about 78F.
Ph is 6.4
These fish are about an inch and a half from nose to tail.
Feeding new life spectrum and blood worms.

I haven't a clue as to what sex they are. They seem to get along well enough though.
They're probably still juveniles then (at least another inch or so growth), and Bolivians aren't as colorful as German Blues, so that may be another thing, if that's what you're thinking?

Water params sound good.

You might also try Mysis shrimp- mine LOVED those!

oh, i know they're less colorful than the germans. these guys are really light, almost white. when i bought them there fins had a lot more pink. they also had a lot more orange and yellow on their bodies. i was just wondering if it was something i am doing. they seem to be in good health.
The bolivians i have seemed to color up a week or two after i got them. Especially the one i know for sure is a male. Probably will just take a little time for them to get used to the new tank. They are a cool fish.
ahh time... time is a good thing.

here's one of them just for the sake of posting a picture:

I have some great photos of my Bolivian rams, they are full of color. As soon as I get back to my desk I will load them up for you.

This is about as colorful as a male gets.... Good diet and keep a female or 2 around and color will show:) These fish are famous for locking lips together for long periods of time. No real damage is done, more of a face off. Very cool fish. By far one of my favorites.

holy crap orlando! what do you feed that guy?
It has very little to do with what you feed them, and a lot to do with how happy you keep them.

Like I said, soft acidic water, nice and warm (78 is fine), and mature male and female together will get very bright during spawning time.

Yours are juvenile, still months from spawning age. Don't worry though, they will eventually get to the point where they are more colorful.
Yesterday evening I noticed the larger one had dug a spawning pit. Does a male or female do that?
Usually the male, though many times both of them will work on a nesting site.
