Why in the heck would this particular shrimp carry the term blue when its color only has a tint of blue??? I bought a couple and really was not impress with its color. Maybe someone can shed some light on this. Very disappointing. It should be a pale blue. Argh

Umm... you should've done your research first. Did you expect Crystal Red shrimp to look like red crystals? No they look like candy canes. How about Red Cherry Shrimp? Why the cherry part? Not really the same tint of red as cherries no? and the males are pale! How about tiger shrimp? They're not orange with black stripes, they just have cool stripes! Nothing tigerlike except for stripes. Why not Zebra shrimp? Striped shrimp?

I understand your disappointment though. It is a very expensive shrimp and spending a load on something you expected but got something less is upsetting.

Thats whats so disappointing with this. I did my research and only source of blue pearl was close up visual pictures of the blue pearl . They look so nice close up. But when you get them..... its a different story. For me the whole hype is created when a new species is introduced to the market. Sort of embelishing its qualities to increase price. Now that to me is deceptive. Thats my experience.....

Did you take the time to read my post?????..... I was refering to the BLUE PEARL! I have every one of those species you mentioned and rather happy with those species. ... I ENCOURAGE you to open a thread and rant on about the other species you talked about. Sounds like someone else is dissapointed.
I know i know. But you were picky with the naming. So I was also being picky with the naming...

Well I'm sorry about your experience. Perhaps they will color up. Photos don't really lie... a select few will be photoshopped but I doubt that from your research that every single one was lying to you!

I was more dissappointed on color..... I may not have conveyed that clear enough. Argh.... my bad...

I wish my LFS could carry these shrimps before I buy them. The only shrimps available locally are your plain cherry shrimp and tiger shrimp. Most of my collection has ben bought online. Ive been fairly happy with the few that I keep but was dissappointed with this particular species...

Just venting...
The blue pearl shrimp is known to be an ice blue color which means its clear with a tint of blue. Trust me i would love some solid blue shrimp but its just not going to happen any time soon. Maybe someday with selective breeding. With good water quality they should be a decent shade of blue though. Give them time. How big are the ones you got? I just got some greens that are tiny and barely show any tint of green but I know that they were bred for color and will eventually be dark green shrimp.
Remember, when a seller takes a pic of a shrimp, they choose the best, brightest colored shrimp to post. Your shrimp will not look like this, yours will be more average colored. Try to find as many pics of a certain species as you can and average all those colors out, and that will likely be closer to what you will receive.
I have shrimp that are solid blue and don't fade. They are called Super dark blue tigers, and my off spring are 80% blue and the rest are light blue to clear.

Welcome back Gabe!!! Such a beautiful DARK BLUE Tiger! WOW!
I like the blue tigers a little lighter blue then that....its hard to tell they are actually blue ;)
Blue Pearl shrimp are a nice blue color. Whoever you bought yours from must have sent you very pale ones. The ones that I am currently breeding are a nice blue color. They are not a navy blue, but more of a lighter ice blue. Hard to explain but they are a very nice shrimp species. There is definitely not a "hint" of blue in the strain I have.

Gabe- Welcome back showoff! :) hahah

I'm back just been busy with the new baby, and plus I just built a new breeding room outside my house. I have some blue pearls and they seem to look light blue to a greenish color. I love blue tigers, and the more you breed the dark ones together the more higher percent of blue ones.

Wow. Gorgeous blue shrimp! I love the contrast with the eyes.
ya blue tigers are probably my favorite looking shrimp :)
Those do look awesome indeed. I have some on the way and will start breeding them soon. I will make them somewhat affordable here in the USA :)

Gabe- congrats on the baby!

That must be hoping you get a good strain of it. There are strains that mayority of offpsirngs are either ligh blue or just have orangy eyes with normal tiger colors...a few dark blue will come along.

cheers,
pedro
I just wanted to mention that I have blue pearls, some are very blue and others not as blue. Water quality is a major factor on the color of your shrimp. When I had cherries along time ago in a 20 gallon they were red but once I moved them to a 55 gallon the red became almost blood red looking. If the water quality is not good or the shrimp are stressed in any way you will not get the color you are looking for.

The color of your substrate also plays a part in the color of your shrimp. I have moved shrimp from one substrate to another and I could not believe how the coloring of the shrimp changed.

Blue Pearl and the blue tigers are not true blue. It is a recessive gene. You can have 2 clear tigers with orange eyes mate and have dark blue babies as well as 2 dark blue tigers mate and have clear babies. The only true thing about blue tigers is the babies will have orange eyes. :)

They're not true blue...yet. Until someone keeps selectively breeding dark blues together until there's a strain where the dominant gene is eventually wiped out if the blue gene is truly recessive. And assuming simple Mendelian genetics...but doing that could introduce a host of disorders into the shrimp. Oh well. It's what the hobby wants, right? :icon_roll

From what you are saying, it is not a simple recessive trait. If it were that simple 2 dark blue tigers would always produce dark blue babbies. Think about it.
