Imgur: The most awesome images on the Internet

So I had a family of BM that had offspring and theyve grown up. However, as they don't breed true, I'm at the stage of moving the rejects to another tank.

This female and 2 other females have a very deep clearish red to them which looks awesome. However, the rostrum seems a bit longer than the other BMs that I have.

Can anyone more familiar with these guys take a loot at the pics and provide an ID?

Thanks,

Some argue that the rostrum length doesn't matter. I'm not so sure which is correct, but yes people say the rostrum is shorter ON BM than on RCS. In RCS the rostrum pretty much extends as far as the peduncle (the sections where the antenna extend from, on each side of the rostrum).

The shrimp in the picture appears to be inbetween the typical rostrum lengths.

However, a more distinguishable trait is the coloring. Blood Marys are supposed to have clear shells (easier to see when you shine a bright light from above) and red tissue, which the ones in the picture have. RCS have color on their shells (varying grades).

I would probably say the one in the pic is a BM.

But I am definitely not an expert. Ask over on The Shrimp Spot forum, tons of shrimp experts over there.

I've asked on Shrimpspot and further research indicates that the rostrum thing was not legitimate. I don't have any side shots but what are you looking for in the tail?
Can you refer me to the links?

I have only heard the rostrum length not being a legit trait from some people that I don't really know, but I personally haven't seen it said by someone with more "credentials" (expert). (I'm genuinely curious)

What did members at ShrimpSpot consider the shrimp in question as? I'm guessing BM especially if the rostrum isn't a indicator.

High Grade RCS or Bloody Mary Neos? Breed more true? Better looking? - Genetics and Selective Breeding - The Shrimp Spot

These are some of the discussions and it seems that the whole csky marketing thing is pretty well known. Also the physical traits of the BM are very evident in my shrimp above. Clearish shell with red flesh. Shrimpspot considered the above shrimp as a BM. And the rostrum of this guy is pretty long in comparison to the short rostrum BM that I also have.

Thanks for the links!

Formerly C-Sky (USA branch), goes by the name Blue Crown Aquatics now. They still are a reputable shrimp business, and they do come out with nice strains they have been breeding. It's just that with these new strains, they haven't been progressed enough to breed more true before being sold. If the strains are worked with enough (selective bred) for generations, you can produce a strain that breeds more true and possibly with even better colors and you could make the short rostrum a actual trait, at least to your strain, if you wanted.

By the way, the produced the Sea Sky (C-Sky) Blue strain of Neos, that are supposed to be a really intense blue (just a high grade blue Neo, pretty much like Royal Blue Tiger Caridinas), and according to sellers of the shrimp, they are supposed to breed pretty true. They are a fairly new strain so if you were interested, I would do a bit of research on other's breeding results. But yeah, Blue Crown/C-Sky still have quality shrimp, just they might sell new strains before they are more well established to breed more true.

Out of this current generation of offspring you had with your BM, about what % would you say qualify as BM?
I know people have had varying results in how true they bred, mostly not breeding true, but now that BM have been out for some time now, I am curious if the strains out there now are breeding more true than when they first came out.

EDIT: Scratch that on the Sea Sky Blue Neos, just looked it up again and see that C-Sky obtained that strain from a different breeder source and didn't develop it themselves, and just slapped on their common name for it, calling it C-Sky/Sea Sky Blue. Sorry about that, I was misled by the name it was given and how C-Sky/Blue Crown was one of the first to start selling it. At the time C-Sky (overseas branch) were one of the only sources with info on that new strain at the time when they first came out and I researched on them. http://www.shrimpspot.com/index.php?/topic/1952-sea-sky-blue/

Out of my first batch of offspring, with probably 10-15 surviving to an IDable age, 2 were rili patterned with BM traits, and about 1 or 2 were not BM at all. It's a pretty high % but I did lose a lot of shrimplets due to some messing around with tanks. I am interested in what this batch will get me. None berried yet but all the females are showing huge saddles.
