Betta in RO water, Low kH

Hey All,

Having a hard time finding this info anywhere. Will a betta do well in RO water with 0kH? I have a Spec V that I want to switch over to RO water that will be reminerealized using SL-Aqua Blue Wizard. This gives about 5gH and 0kH. This is more for my shrimp (psuedo tibees) but I wanted to keep culls with the betta.

So is 0kH ok for a betta or does he needs more buffering?

Betta splendens (cronwtail, double tail, veiltail, halfmoon, plakat, elephant ear, deltas, etc etc) are very durable to a wide range of pH and hardness, s/he should be fine with those params. I'd recommend taking your time with acclimating the betta to your tank's water as its likely not to be the same as the water source your betta comes home in. Don't just flaot bag on tank and release, use drip acclmation or cup in small amounts of tank water every 5 minutes for an hour or so.
Be mindful that bettas are predatory fish and they may turn your cull tank into a lobster buffet. Every betta is different though. I've had one that could be kept with cherry shrimp just fine,.. I have another that killed large shrimp:ghost and amano as large as him (including his large tail fin) and guarded/ate his kills. Keeping the tank densely planted with plenty of hiding places for the shrimp that the betta can't get its head stuck in (chollo wood, and those little shrimp cubes may be betta death traps depending on size of item/fish). I'd recommend thick vegetation-especially dense mosses to increase shrimp survival.

I think it should be ok as long as there is a little gH. The culls should be good live food for the betta.

Thanks for the info and assurance! I thought he'd be fine but wanted to be sure. I already have him in a tank with tangerine tigers in my tap water (150 tds, gh 7ish, kh2) and he's all good. He'll go after the smallest shrimplets but they hide well. Grown shrimp he ignores. Not worried all that much of the culls, just really wanted to convert all tanks over to RO now that I have it. I figured I'll do 25-30% water changes ever 4 days or so to convert it over fully.

Thanks too! I figured he'd be happier in this tank and I'm cool with culls as dinner! Not so happy with my tigers getting eaten now haha.
I dont specifically know about bettas, but I do know that many other betta genus fish actually need very soft water.
Don't licorice gouramis specifically require RO water?
