Hi All
Most substrates on the market You can buy for shrimp tend to lower PH and GH,and are more suitable for Bee shrimp, but which of those substrates would be best for Neocaridinia?

Sand/blasting grit, even gravel works. Hell I had mine on canister filter media (Eheim Substrat Pro).

Yeah that other stuff is for scaring off new ppl to the hobby.

Neos, specifically red cherry shrimp, don't really about the substrate and are pretty hardy. The special shrimp soil is more for the crystal reds and other fragile cardinias that need specific water parameters.

A while back someone was complaining about their shrimp not grazing on their gravel. I think they get the idea that they need to do that from seeing shrimp graze onthe amazonia/fluval stratum
Anything will work - my painted reds are doing great in regular sand capped dirted 5.5 gallon. My water is hard at 7.5-8ph.
Pool Filter Sand
Play Sand
Media Blasting Sand
Gravel (*NOT* Petco and maybe Petsmart gravel??? painted rocks no good!)
Dirt
Miracle Grow Organic* (double check with this, must be a specific one that I've heard people use???)

Mainly anything that doesn't alter the water chemistry... not just pH wise, but GH, KH and TDS.

Play sand can be purchased as cheap as $5 for a 50lb bag.

Media Blasting Sand is $8 and up for a bag. Black Diamond from Tractor Supply is $8 for a 50lb bag. It's black with amber "highlights".

If you want *BLACK BLACK*, then there's Black Beauty which goes for $40-$50 for a 50lb bag. I see on Amazon, $15 for 10lb, and $30 for 25 lbs.

I thought I had to have at least a 10 gallon. I have lots of 5's. I do worry about them escaping.
5s would be fine if you were selectively breeding and separating a colony into several tanks. might get a bit crowded, as far as feeding goes; but you certainly wont have too much waste or anything.
10's are recommended as they often have more stability than smaller tanks do and it's a little harder to mess up water parameters. Wouldn't go smaller than a 5 if you don't have experience keeping shrimp and stable water parameters.
