Best plants for hiding filter and heater?

3222 Views 6 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  MtAnimals
My filter is 2 sponges driven by an air pump that turns over 1 gallon per minute. The heater is set to 75F. I want a tallish plant 8 inches+ that would be happy sitting about an inch from the sponges and heater. I know that Egeria densa does well but I would like something a bit more interesting. It would need to be a low light/low tech plant, any suggestions?

Hydrocotyle tripartita - more bushy

baby tears - more stemmy
Got giant vallis to hide mine but waiting for it to grow in a bit. Only rescaped it the other day. Act as a good barrier if you put finer plants infront of them

Hygrophila Angustifolia (Willow Hygro)

Wait for it to just barely hit the surface then trim new lower shoots that would go higher. Trimmings go right back in the substrate and root like crazy.

Additional benefit is that it acts as an "indicator species" (one of several) that tends to show nutrient deficiencies well before other (sometimes more costly/valuable) species do.

I'm thinking of using Nymphea "taiwan". Seem to grow really dense and "bushy" with Co2 and medium/high light.
Thanks for the suggestions. I really like vallis especially the curly type, but it seems to prefer hard water, so not sure I want to risk it again at gH3. I say again because I've had it before but thought it didn't survive because my lighting at that time wasn't sufficient.
rotala rotundfolia grows like a weed, and it will get thick if you keep replanting the peices you cut off.

Wisteria will also make a dense mass fast, especially if you trim it off short.
