Just wondering what most folks would recommend for an algae eater for a medium/larger-sized tank. I have a 90g currently stocked with otto's and harlequin rasboras. The otto's so a good job, but they don't touch some of the hair and slime algae that sometimes gets on leaves. I don't want to get something that will rummage around and destroy plant leaves or uproot things. I'd also like to stay away from aggressive fish. If it's a rare or a type that isn't usually found at LFS's, then I'm probably not interested. Here are a few ideas I have so far:

bristlenose pleco (~$30 or >$100 for the albino form)
rubber-lipped pleco
butterfly pleco
more ottos
cherry or amano shrimp (but very tough to find around here)

what about some amano shrimp?
I doubt you looked hard enough for them because you are in california.
You can get anything in california.

You can also look around here on the forum for people selling or trading amano shrimp. I am almost posetive you will find a few stores close by you, maybe frisco that sells amano shrimp. They should be find for shipping that short of a distance.

I know of a place in Albany that sells cherry and amano shrimp, but its pretty far away from here (1 1/2 hrs or so). I rarely get over even close to that area. There are 3 decent LFS's that I know of in Sac, but none of them have ever stocked either amanos or cherrys to my knowledge and I used to work at one of them.
Aside from that, I'm thinking of eventually stocking the tank with a few angels or scalare's, so that will likely rule out shrimp completely, right?

Bushynose plecos are great, your LFS are pretty overpriced though! Check the simplydiscus.com forum, there's a lady on there who just posted about wanted to get sell off some juvenile BN plecos that were bred in her tank. I forget her name but she's in sacramento - her avatar had a black and white cat I believe. Also check out rhino plecos, very similar to BN plecos in what they eat and size.

shrimp = angelfish food

PM me if you are still interested in getting some cherries. I should be able to sell you a few and as long as you don't have anything that will eat the babies, you'll end up with a bunch. I'm in the San Jose/Campbell area. Oh and i also have some juvie BNs but hopefully you can get them locally.

Yeah, the LFS I'm speaking of *is* overpriced. The same place wanted $125/ea for a couple (supposedly) wild-caught green severums. I've also seen interesting strains of plecos, like vampire or emperor, but those are usually in the $50-$80 range. Heck, rummynose tetras go for $2.99 and cardinal tetras (I think) are $3.99. Highway robbery unless you have store credit or something... ;P
I'll check out that website about the local BN pleco breeder. I do have a 20H I'm tearing down and a new 25g will go up in its place, which I'll probably use for a shrimp breeding tank. We'll see.
