Beamswork LED for 65 gallon

1861 Views 13 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Blackheart
I would like to purchase a beamswork led fixture for my 65 gallon low-tech setup. I'm not really sure which one to go with. I do know I will probably more than likely need two, but I would at least like to get one to start with for now. The light will also more than likely be purchased for my 58 gallon tank as well which is 4 inches shorter than my 65 if that makes a difference.

Thanks but that's really a lot more than my budget affords, that's why I was looking into beamswork more. The most expensive one I saw so far was 70 dollars.

Not sure if a 30" will fit your 58.
36" are available..

Your call but a 36" will overhang a bit but fit the 58 .. possibly better than the 30"..
5 row 1/2 W emitters aren't too shabby @ 24" acording to this..

Thanks guys, this is helpful for me.

I have a 55gal 48x13x20 and recently changed lighting from a 36'' 4xT5, to a 48'' Planted+ 24/7. After switching to the Planted+ I basically lost all growth in my plants...

Do you guys think adding a Beamswork 48'' 3w would work? If so, should I go for the 32 LED version or 64 Led?

I was thinking of adding a FugeRay Plant+ but the beamsworks seem to be a better deal and light.

I run Co2 injection and regular ferts.. =)

Thanks,

Thanks,
As a "rule of thumb" anytime one "upgrades" from t5/8 and wants equal to more light just match the wattage w/ LED's.
You can almost guarantee parody or better.. Technically one could go 1/2W LED to 1W t5/8..
consider it a ballpark figure though..
LED's are much more "unidirectional" so suffer little losses as w/ reflectors ect.
Efficiency though can be from 1/2 to 1.5X that of tubes for "lumen" output"

The 2 factors add and subtract accordingly of course..poor efficiency at 1/2 wattage is a loss. 1.5x efficient at equal watts is a gain..

I've sort of stopped encouraging Beamswork 3W emitter units only for the simple fact they are falling off the "acceptable efficiency" bar..
If one need just raw power and/or directionality they are fine..
90 degrees can make up for the sins of inefficiency..

One note of caution (and does go for tubes but to a somewhat lesser degree) watt rating doen't always translate to actual watts at5 the diode or tube..

So a 36 inch fixture wouldn't fit on the 58? The 58 is the same footprint as 65 though. They are both 36x18

sorry confused "shorter" w/ less wide.. 36" will fit 36"..;)
okay cool thanks ;) Do you think one fixture would be a enough for the 58?
65 is 24" deep 58 is 20" deep.. subtracting substrate but adding height of light off water..
est. 50PAR (36 for the 65) and wanting low tech.. don't see lack of light as an issue..

Per Jeffkrols recommendation I picked up the Beamswork DA 6500K 0.50W 36" for my 65 gallon, and I feel I have more than enough light for low light, possibly on the low end of medium light. Within a couple of weeks I had some significant hair algae growth which I'd never had before, and my my narrow leaf chain sword had started sending runners and I have replanted 4 new plants thanks to that! I've bought the TC420 controller to make my own "24/7" mode to dim the light for most of the day.

Nice! Yeah I think I might pick up this light. I wanted to try something like the Finnex Planted Plus, but I think I would need two fixtures for something like that. And I don't really feel like spending 130+ dollars if I don't have to.
FYI this was the controller I bought for use with the Beamswork: https://www.amazon.com/RGBSIGHT-Pro...?ie=UTF8&qid=1489944104&sr=8-1&keywords=tc420

Only using it for 1 day so far but highly recommended so far. Took a bit to figure out how to use the software, but now I've got nice gradual ramp up in the morning, full brightness mid day, and a nice gradual ramp down in the evening. If I need more light/less light I can just adjust the schedule. I tried setting the light to 1% power at night, it provides a nice, very subtle starlight/moonlight type effect.
I don't need a controller, I will be using just the fixture.
