What can I use to fix two pieces of driftwood together (or branches or whatever)? I have fishing line, but making a semi-permanent attachment seems like it'd be a little annoying at times. Some mass-produced aquarium ornaments look like they have hot glue to hold certain pieces together. Is this safe? Any other ideas? Thanks in advance.

You could use stainless steel screws. I haven't used them personally but I know a friend who has.

+1 for stainless steel screws. Attach your frankenstump to something wide and bury it in the substrate, much less trouble doing that. I just used a stray bit of acrylic sheet, the weight of the substrate keeps the structure DOWN. I couldn't do it on the other side and am paying for it every time I work in the tank.
