I need to shim my new stand I built and I have some plastic toilet shims. They work perfect, but I'm unsure if they will break under pressure. Are wood shims better or does it matter. The whole stand will have about 800 lbs. total on it, obviously it will be distributed throughout the stand, but I just want to be safe then sorry.

They'll work. I use wood shims. Push them in from both sides and use a chisel to break off the pieces that are visable.

So your saying I should go buy the wood shims and not use the plastic ones I have?

Plastic is fine. Wood is easier to chisel the excess bit.

I just found a piece of wood that is perfect from when I built my stand. So I'll use both.

Home Depot sells a shim that's a hybrid of plastic and wood. Its made in such a way you can snap off the excess by hand.
