How can I tell?
All of that brown stuff at the base by the crown, that is the plant getting rid of what it no longer needs. Those are what is left of stems that had leaves. The leaves are gone, so the stems no longer need to be there because they can no longer benefit the plant. You have white roots, which means that the plant is still alive and wanting to remain that way. If you want, you can gently snip, rub, or rinse the dead plant matter away. There is not a lot of it to begin with, so you may as well leave them in the substrate and let nature do it's thing. A root tab would help the plants get established. It may take a while for the swords to get going, but when they do, they will go, go, go. When you get a leaf that is turning brown and dying, just run your scissors down the stem until you bump the base and snip it off.
