I got a bunch today and the leaves are awfully thick and doesn't seem aquatic.

yea its aquatic they will be very bushy

They likely came in emersed form. They will convert to aquatic.

So, basically, all the emersed leaves will die off..

Slowly... at least under < 2 wpg low light like I grew it in. But the submerse growth took off well and the stalk stumps I left in place after trimming resprouted pretty quickly.

I want to grow it emerse someday, I've read the flowers are red or purple, and fragrant.
