Aqueon Fluorescent Hood Improvements??

959 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  PlantedRich
I'm planning on setting up my old 20H tank (24"x12"x17") soon but I only have an "Aqueon Delucxe Full Fluorescent Hood". The problem with it is that it only has 1 15 watt 8000k T8 bulb, which I think isn't enough for even low light plants. Is there any better bulbs i could buy or anything else to make to that it produces enough light to supprt low/medium light plants? I really don't want to buy a new hood... Thanks! :)

There is no bulb that will significantly increase the light. But, you can easily modify that hood to hold screw-in CFL bulbs.
Maybe an easy option would be to offer a local swap for a hood meant for incandcesent bulbs, then use CFL twisties.

How easy is easy? I have absolutely no experience with electrical stuff :icon_roll

With that much experience I think your best bet is what PlantedRich suggested. Or visit a Good Will type store and see if they have an incandescent light that would fit, for a couple of dollars.
If you are in a metro area or where there are lots of garage sales/ flea markets there is a good chance that you can buy a hood (possibly tank) for what the materials would cost to convert the present hood. Two dollars here and there can soon add up to the price of a used hood.
