deep as in front to back? Or top to bottom?

Front to back = low plants in front and taller plants in the back. Sloping the substrate will help also

Top to bottom = foreground throughout the whole tank, with perhaps a few tall plants in the back.

A mirror background will help a tank look deeper... until you see yourself in it.
... or until algae start to cover it. I have had mirror backgrounds for many years, and must say that a black background works well too.

Perhaps a dark green would give maximum depth perception. Suggesting that there are more plants somewhere far in the back.
