My wife told me about it when she saw they were hiring in the paper. I went to the Petland website and it didn't list a date just 'coming soon'. I liked the one in Hoffman Estates, so this rocks to have one so close  !

Cool. It's in a good spot, too...

744 East Boughton Rd.
Bolingbrook, IL 60440-2279
I wonder when it's opening. I assume they would have a pretty good sale for the grand opening. Maybe I'll drive by this weekend and see how far along they are with the store.
I called the other store and they mentioned the Bolingbrook store will open on the 15th of Dec.
That's awesome. Looks like I have something to do this weekend :red_mouth
This is perfect timing since I'm re-scaping with moss, driftwood, and various java ferns.
Wow - never thought I'd see such a crowd at a fish store!

All the fish and plants looked so healthy and clean - had to keep reminding myself it was the store's 1st day. Nevertheless, a very nice selection of healthy looking plants, and some more unusual fish for a pet store - such as several loaches.

Perhaps best was a wide selection of equipment - lighting and filters (tho I didn't check prices). And lots of chemicals, meds, supplies, etc.

As an added bonus, I met and traded plants with crazy eddie. What a generous guy! Spent a couple of hours Sunday tying a ****load of java fern to several pieces of wood.
I got there around 2pm, and the place was a nuthouse ! I picked up some various java fern's and a piece of driftwood.

According to the flyer, there's 50% off all plants & fish until 12/31/07, so I'll probably make a return trip. I was going to get a male guppy, but there was quite a line to get fish.

I'm just glad to have a store close to home that has a decent plant selection.

Man, you me and Crazy Eddie must have been there at the same time. Too bad you purchased java fern, because Eddie gave me a sackful.
No big deal about the java fern...I only picked up a couple. Did the prices on livestock and plants strike you and crazy eddie as a little high ? I saw some male guppies I liked, but noticed they were $8.99. I wonder if the prices will change after the 50% sale.
I'm such a cheapass that just about any store prices strike me as high. I buy all my fish and fishfood at the Chicago Cichlid Swaps, so after getting 10 albino and longfin bristlenose plecos for $15 with a bunch of albino cories tossed in for free, $9 a piece seems high. ;) And when someone walks up to you and hands you a pound or so of java fern (in exchange for a clipping or 2) ... And I buy all my ferts in bulk and equipment on-line.

They had the biggest neons I've ever seen, for somwhere around $2.69 a piece (plus 50% off). Other fish looked to me similar to other fish stores. Their angels were pricey, but again, I'm used to fish swap prices.

Was disappointed to see the dyed fish. :(

Their fish selection seemed a tad unbalanced to me. I mean, they had more tanks of platys than I knew existed. And my buddy keeps guppies, so I have a hard time imagining anyone paying for them! ;) They only had 2 tanks of angels. And I expected to see more different cories. But they did have 5 or so different rainbows, and a few different loaches. A little better/different selection than I see in many LFS.

Didn't talk to any staff. How knowledgeable did they seem?

I looked to see prices on a couple of canister filters, but did not readily see the prices. But I expect all gear to be way more expensive than on-line. The only plant I checked the price of was anubias nana - looked like a nice-sized healthy chunk for $6 or so.

What impressed me, tho, was that they had a wider array of gear that would appeal to a more harcore fishhead. Like PVC fittings, or multiple lighting options. Very unusual to see so much selection in a single fish store. I always find it disappointing to go to a LFS to check out - say - canister filters and find that they only carry one or at most 2 brands. Or they don't have a full line of test kits or meds.

joshua969 - I don't think you'll see the prices drop. In NY, the store's prices are much higher than other stores in the area. However, they have 50% coupons from time to time (which brings the price in line with others) and if you join their membership club you can usually get a discount (I think it's 25%). They do sometimes have unusual or hard to find fish, but overall I find that the prices are high and I don't go there too often.
I drove to this store from downtown chicago, and it was worth it. I've been trying to find "Head and Tail light" tetras for a while and they had some healthy looking ones.

They have the biggest neons I've ever seen, but they don't look right. Their spines are crooked.

They had a good selection of plants, great selection of fish, excellent selection of food and hardware.

Some of the staff seemed more knowledgable than the regular Petco/Petsmart staff. No one asked me any questions about my setup when I asked to get the tetras. In fact, I didn't hear them asking anyone (including kids) anything.
I have recently been to the store, and there is more aquarium equipment than I have ever seen in one store. Staff seems pretty knowledgable also. Picked up a few plants and several barbs.
I just recently got to check out this shop. all i can say is wow. they are a little over priced, but have a lot of fish and plants no one else has. once they get there 3 end tanks up and running, they will have more selction of plants than any of the chicago land area stores combined. they also had some of the best bolivn rams i have ever seen in my life. they show tanks are huge, one filled with saltwater fish, and the other one with freshwater filled with a group of rare chicilds. I recomend this place to any one!!!
I stopped in this past weekend, and things seem like they went downhill fast. The plant tanks were covered in hair algae, and I saw at least 10 tanks with green water. I also saw they were selling vampire shrimp, which were actually bamboo shrimp for $19.99. On the other hand, they had some of the biggest amano shrimp I've ever seen.

As much effort as many of us put into our tanks - and the worries we have nonetheless - I often marvel at the effort it must take to maintain a store.

Hopefully, they are going through a growing stage that they will learn from, and things will improve again.
remember that petland stores are owned and operated by one or a few owners. These are not controlled by corporate office. The problem is they have limited funds and hire a staff so it is just operable. Managers in order to save money hire people that are not qualified and attempt to train them. This has its pluses and minuses. Unqualifed are cheap and do shotty work during their training and may lack motivation learning about aquariums. The qualified are usually hobbiests at home and that type of employee is expensive but the quality of work they do is worth more then what they get paid. If I were the boss I would hire the qualified and take on the extra expense because we all know that going to a clean aquarium store is what keeps us coming back.

The best part of old orchard aquarium is they are nice and clean, unfortunatley their attitudes dont have the best reputation. It is hard to find that one store that has friendly, qualified, and clean employees.

Dang, I was there the other week and things still looked the same. Hair algae on the planted tanks and GW on some tanks (SW & FW). I'm surprised they hadn't cleaned it in awhile.

But I do have to rush in there to checkout the Vampire shrimp.
I think they also had tiger shrimp, but I forgot the price. I'm planning on going back this weekend to get more amano shrimp and see if they have anymore apisto's, since I got my first batch from them. The next time I need plants, I'll probably head to the Schumburg store or back to Scott's.
how much are the amano's as well as tigers. I have some tigers but I want to add to my population of 2 females.
