Quick favor to ask of anyone with an AquaClear 20: could you please measure how far into the aquarium it protrudes? ie, measuring from the inside of the glass to the edge of its "waterfall".

Thanks!!

An ac70 measures about 1.25"

I can confirm this for an AC70, but here is the thing...

It will depend on your tank. And where you are measuring from. Typically on my my tanks there is an outside part of the rim, and two measurement points for inside, an upper lip and lower lop. For me it was:

AC70
OUTSIDE RIM: 2"
INSIDE UPPER LIP: 1.5"
INSIDE LOWER LIP: 1.25"

AC50
OUTSIDE: 1.25"
INSIDE UPPER LIP: 1"
INSIDE LOWER LIP: 0.75"

I would suspect an AC20 to be close to the 50. But it may be a hair smaller on the measurements.

Thanks for that Def.

For me it would be a rimless tank, so if I understand you right, it would be the shortest of your measurements?

That might vary. There is usually an adjuster on the ACs to adjust the tilt, which can effect the distance. Also, you can make a spacer to sit the back of the filter further away from the glass. I had to do this on one tank I used an AC50 on. I took a bottle crap, wrapped it in electrical tape, and used it as a spacer to pull it back a bit.

Otherwise, you would want to use the middle number, the Upper Lip on, because that would be closest to the inside of the rim. My rims are roughly 0.25" thick. Your rim depending on the glass thickness, is prob half that. On my standard style tanks the INSIDE UPPER LIP would be like the inside of a rimless tank. I added the LOWER LIP because typically on this style tank there is a second lip for hoods and accessories so I thought that might be an important number.

Depending on what you are trying to accomplish it may be best to assume the lower or the higher of the numbers. If possible, get one and see if it works for you, without getting it wet. I actually am thinking of putting one on my 5 gallon.

The AC20

The gap between the body of the filter and the part that hangs in the tank is .75"

The dimension between the body of the filter closest to the tank and the lip is 1.5".

The actual lip dimension including the intake pipe is .75" so this would be how much can actually stick into the tank IF you use the leveler to keep the filter level.
