Has anyone ever fed store bought shrimps or store bought shrimp shell to their pet shrimps (oebt, crs, rcs, etc...)?

My family always buy them & throw them away. I know , I know that this is a form of cannibalism, but i believe its the most beneficial food source for them since it does contained most if not all the nutrients they require.?

cannibalism is not a problem because some people feed their shrimp the same stuff they feed their fish and that stuff usually contains shrimp meal lol. besides they eat each other when one of them passes away anyways.

and maybe feeding shrimp shells is a smart idea because it'll give them the calcium they need to molt. shrugs* sounds interesting.

"Cannibalism seems to be especially prevalent in aquatic communities, in which up to approximately 90% of the organisms engage in cannibalism at some point of the life cycle. Cannibalism is also not restricted to carnivorous species, but is commonly found in herbivores and detritivores.[2]"

As another plus they are probably loaded with antibiotics. As a down side, this practice Could kill all your shrimp with shrimp pathogens-If the massive ammonia spike from the dead shrimp tissue doesnt get them first. Better yet, go buy some goldfish flakes at walmart and force your shrimp to live on those. As for the shrimp shell, I'll bet there are better ways to provide calcium, but if you boiled them first, and your shrimp could manage to eat them, this could be a safe way to use human grade shrimp to benefit your shrimp.

I have bought fresh shrimp in my local grocery store to feed my fish but since I only need 1 or 2 shrimp each time I got the "what the heck look" each time from the clerks. I stopped doing it, lol. It's ok if you eat them yourself but I am not a seafood lover. I would think it is ok if you just feed them a tiny amount and eat the rest yourself.

since i keep them with guppies, they actually eat flake foods. I never thought about the boiling thing, hmmmm. But i've heard if you boil foods, it takes away most of the nutrients.

With things like this, the majority of the calcium doesn't leach out. However, it would probably be easier to buy a supplement, use calcium clay (Like the Mosura Old Sea Clay) or bake eggshells and use them for calcium. Here is a good article on baking/pulverizing eggshell. http://nourishedmagazine.com.au/blog/articles/how-to-make-calcium-using-egg-shells DO NOT use the lemon recipes -- the lemon would probably be harmful for the shrimp. I have done something similar for my box turtles -- does anyone use something along these lines for their shrimp? I've been considering doing this again, as my family eats a ton of eggs!

That's what I thought at first too but from what I've heard about cannibalism is- it provides all the nutrients needed for sustaining the species or something like that.
Well, the store prawns are saltwater and much bigger whereas our shrimp are tiny and live in freshwater so I guess it would be the same as a human eating a gorilla.
What you've heard might apply to a carnivourous fish that is consuming it's bretheren whole, and only if the brethren are in good nutritional standing when they are eaten. And like overgrowth said, it would be like a human eating a gorrilla. Plus your shrimp are only going to eat a small component of the tiger shrimp or pacific white shrimp, whatever it may be, so they are going to miss out on many of the nutrients they would need.
