Anyone elses's Ottos & SAEs do this?

I've got 2 SAEs and 3 Ottos in my 55 gal. Well, 2 chocolate khulis too, but they aren't sociable and are still hiding.

Anyway, the 5 algae eaters all school together a LOT of the time. It is so funny to watch. All five will swim together, or in sets of 2 and 3, and not neccesarily w/ their own species. It's as if they don't realize they're not the same fish.

I mean, I know that they kinda look the same to me, but you'd think they would all know the difference...

get more khulis.. they like to hang out in big groups too (5+). That's why they're not so sociable in your tank.
My Otto's love to school with my tetra's. Its kind of funny seeing them do it too.
Do I have to get more chocolate khulis, or can I get another kind of khuli? Will they know the difference? Just want to make sure I don't alienate the ones I've got.

I got these two kind of far from my house the other day while mystery shopping a pet store, I don't neccesarily want to drive 1/2 hour away to get them but I will if I have to... I have to do another shop at another location this week, so if they have them there I will pick them up.
Get more kuhlis of the same species. For a 55g, you should be able to get other species. Just as a general rule for all loachaholics, always keep 3 of each species as a minimum number.
My ottos try to school with my chain loaches... but alas, they just cant keep up with the faster loaches.

Ottos: built for algae eating, not for speed.
Normal kuhlis and black ones do fine together. I have around 20+ kuhlis in my 55g. I would like to get the albino but they are very very rare. Kuhlis are my favorite little fish with lots of personality. But very hard to catch took me about 2 1/2 hours to catch 10 out of a 15g.
Hmm I never see my ottos swimming. They are always resting / algae eating on a leaf. The ony time they m,ove is to hop to another leaf it seems.

LOL...New Yorkers. Half an hour is my minimum drive to any LFS/big chain pet store worth going to! I drive 45 minutes each way to my main LFS.
Petsmart sells the black/chocolate khulis for $2.99 or something like that each.
Oh, and yeah, my Otos swim around sometimes, but I haven't noticed them swimming with other fish.
here's a shoal of ottos.

Oooh... I like. Now that's something to aspire to at some point...

My otos and my pygmy cories school together...
So I did my shop at the other Store X (can't say since it was a mystery shop, lol) today and picked up 4 more black Khulis. They were $1.79 each. Brought them home and put them in the tank (after acclimating them for 1 hr, adding a little bit of tank water to the bag every 15 mins) and they all dissapeared except for one. He was the smallest of the 4, the girl caught him accidentally while hunting down another and just "let me have him" since she didn't want to stress the other fish out by trying to take him back out of the box. OY! Anyway, the little guy doesn't look so great...he's just lying on the ground on his side and breathing very sporadically... I don't think he's going to make it, he looks WAY stressed... :( Poor fishy.

So now I have 6 black Kuhlis in there and I hope they are happier fish...maybe I'll see more of them now...
whitepine,
here's a shoal of ottos.
Woah... somebody is serious about getting rid of algae! :)

Umm how big of a tank is that?
Jenny, I do mystery shops, too. Some photo audits and general merchandising, too. :)
Amanda,
Yeah, it's fun and extra money. Especially right now at the end of the month. I drove all over hell and creation today (okay, so like 50 miles round trip) and made over $100!! LoL And next week I get to go to yet another Store X location and get more free fish. At this rate I'll wind up stocking my tank for next to nothing. :)

Since I've been "laid off" from my job until after I have my baby I can use all the extra $ I can get right now. Usually I don't shop this much, but it will pay the bills even if it is a hassle sometimes.

I've never done merchandising - it seems like a big PITA. Do you like it?

Mine do that too, it's like the otos think they're with their older brother, lol.
