I did it years ago on an aquarium where one side got a lot of sunlight from a nearby window.

Is the aquarium in a place where the sides aren't viewable? You'd lose so much viewing space IMHO by blacking out 3 sides of the tank. Just my 2 cents though.

I have blacked out the sides of a 5-gallon tank. I felt that it reduced the health of the tank. There was less biofilm and less plant growth as a result.

I did on a 10 a while ago, I have since taken this tank down. Check it out in this journal.

I was doing this to eliminate looking at the drywall from the side. This was on the nightstand in the corner. After having it set up for a while, I didnt like the looks of it. Made the tank feel really confined and gloomy.

Most of my tanks are built into cabinets to some degree so i tend to black out the sides and hide my equipment and pipes on the side. Here is a 55 gallon with blackout on the back and both sides. I don't have any regrets. Like Goodwood said above it does have a tendency to make the tank darker, but in this setup i thought it really makes my green neon's color pop.
