I bring in my outdoor goldfish for the winter. They go in a low tech planted community tank. I haven't had any problems with them eating the plants. The plants are more hardy broad leaf cuttings from my main tank.
Years ago I kept 4 fancy gold fish in a 75 gallon hex that had about a foot thick mat of hornwort floating on top. That worked pretty well to help keep the nitrates down.
