Hi there! I'm new to the scene. My Bestie down in White Marsh Area is getting me into fish. Hers are amazing! (Endlers and guppies).

I would love to know other local Marylanders. Where you are from and what are your favorites?

I live in Havre de Grace area and I am learning more. I have a 5.5 I want to put small fish in (I would love suggestions). I do not like betta fish (I do not know why, I just never really liked them) and I want something heavily planted with shrimpies.

Where do you go for your fish needs? Are there any breeding or exchange websites? Ant websites have networks that we have used for her ant farms.

Thank you for your time!

Hello fellow Marylander! I'm up in Ellicott City.

Best local fish store for plants by a wide margin is House of Tropicals in Glen Burnie. The store itself is not going to win any beauty contests and like most fish stores, the knowledge you get from the employees there will not exceed what you could learn by yourself googling any one topic for 10 minutes. BUT, their plant selection exceeds any other 3 stores combined and then doubled again. Their fish selection is also pretty good, though they do not quarantine anything. It comes in, gets acclimated, gets added to the tanks and is sold all within hours.

The next best store is probably Londonetowne Tropicals south of Annapolis. They have a lot of oddball fish and some plants. But their prices are generally 20 to 40% higher then anyone else. Still a good option if looking for something unique.

For a 5 gallon tank you really don't have a lot of livestock options because the tank size is so small. I think you could add 5 or 6 male endlers but others would flat say that you need a bigger tank. No matter what you do, going with large (50+%) weekly water changes will be essential to keeping everything alive in such a small tank.

As far as networks, there are several local facebook groups for the maryland aquarium hobby. If there is anyplace better for communicating with other hobbyists, I'm not aware of it.

Hey fellow Marylander. Rising Sun here. I have 3 tanks but only one is going to be setup. It's a 20 gallon long that will be heavily planted community tank with the main feature fish being a dwarf gourami. Thinking of starting a tank journal.

I'll second House of Tropicals in Glen Burnie. They have a huge selection of fish and plants. Another good place is That Pet Place in Elizabethtown, PA just west of Lancaster. Large selection of fish, very popular. You can visit them at Thatpetplace.com.
