Hey Turbo,

There is a place in Temple, NH that has terrific deals on fish and dry goods. I didn't see much in the way of plants there, but I figure the best plants are going to be available online here anyhow.

Please let me know if you want more information on this place in Temple and I will try to post it for you.

fish in maine

The best place I have found for fish and plants in this area is the Kennel Shop in Windham. The tanks are clean and the fish seem to be healthy. They do not have a huge selection but have a different selection every week and I have found fish and plants there that I have not been able to find anywhere else. This week, for new fish, I found wild blue tetras, some killifish and whiptailed cats. Their plant selection is the best I have found any where. If they do not have something I want they have been great about ordering it for me and the prices are the best I have seen. This week I got some African fern, which I have been looking for forever, nice plants for $4 each. The staff seem to know what they are talking about and have been very helpful.

aquatic concepts

I have only been to aquatic concepts once and I think I hit it on a bad day. They were cleaning out the tanks to do some remodeling I think. They did not have many plants that day but there was a good selection of fish. The staff was extremely helpful and answered a ton of questions for me on setting up my first planted tank.

I live in connecticut but I was recently in Maine for vacation for a week. In Portsmouth right off the highway there is a plaza with like barnes and noble in it, best buy and such. Well in there next to dick's was a place called pet quarters.
It seemed very nice, as soon as I walked in several employees greeted me within the first 5 minutes. Their tanks were very nice and clean and they had 2 people working over in that section. The fish seemed healthy and they had quite a bit to choose from. If I moved to Maine I would give this store a shot.

Petco huh? Well the one located in Topsham Maine has a decent fish selection, a weak plant section, and 75% of their staff that works the fish area don't know didly squat. The only person that was knowledgable was the blonde girl, i think her name was sarah, shes very helpful. Ive noticed some of their tanks become quaranteened more often than other stores in the area. Thats what keeps me away from petco's live stock.=[
Doesn't mean I wont buy some from there though.

In Brunswick Maine there is a small pet shop on the back side of Hannaford on Main Street, called Brooks Feed and Farm. The people there are all great. Their tanks are all ways clean and stocked, fish are healthy as can be. On the down side they only have two 20 gallon tanks with plants in them. BUT.....If they do'nt have the species of fish or plant you want, They will do their best to find them from one of their suppliers.
If you go there, here is a hint....On fri-sun they sell all of their fish half off except for their feeder fish and fry.

I would really like to go check out "Aquatic Concepts" in Westbrook. Maine needs more quality Fish and aquatic plant stores. I don't know how you all feel but i really care for ordering plants and fish online.

Please Let us know if you know of any other good Local fish stores!

Aquatic Concepts in Westbrook is not longer open. It was been gone for more than a year I believe. I also am fairly certain that they moved to Rochester, NH. When I was a kid (about 15 years ago), AQ in Westbrook was a GREAT store, but it kept having fits and starts over the years, getting bigger then smaller, and then smaller again. It was pretty bad in the last few years, 07-09. I think moving to Rochester was probably a good idea, hopefully kept the business alive. SO, my point being, dont drive all the ay to Westbrook, since the store is no longer there.

Petco and PetQuarters (Maine owned), are really the only places in the Portland area to get FW now... PetQuarters staff if very good, but they recently shut down 1/2 their tanks. Still the biggest selection around, but it is VERY common stuff, nothing really special ever shows up in terms of livestock.

The Black Shark in Lewiston is worth checking out. I went there a few months ago and they had a fair number of unusual fish like celestial pearl danios, discus, various gouramis and cats that you don't see at the stores around Portland.

Agreed. An excellent store.

More locally the best I've found so far is the Pet Quarters by the mall. They have a lot of tanks and more gourami and cichlids than you'd expect from a non-specialty store. Prices on livestock are quite good. The Bad: The markup on equipment etc is ridiculous, and fish health can be very hit or miss. Both standard for big generic pet stores, but that isn't really any excuse.

Just an update:

The PetLife (formerly The Kennel Store) just over the bridge in SoPo has a small selection of fish, but they tend to have different stuff from other stores in the area. Stuff like Kuhli Loaches and rarer tetras, and some interesting cichlids. Excellent prices on livestock too. Can't attest to health, but everything looked fine, no overstocked tanks, and a pair of Kribs had free-swimming fry in one of the tanks. Worth a look if you're shopping for fish locally...
