Does anybody have any experience trying to import plants species from a holiday destination?

For example, say I'd book a return ticket for Borneo. You would probably need special permission to bring back or mail back some plants.
Would this go through CITES? And how would one go about getting a permit?

I remember reading more detailed discussions on this topic on other forums.

My understanding is that you need a phytosanitary certificate. This is generally considered to be too time consuming and expensive to obtain for a hobbyist.
