I just got Adobe Lightroom. I've been using Corel Paint Shop Pro X 2.

Do I have to uninstall Corel before installing Lightroom? Does anyone know if anything terrible would happen to my pic files if I get rid of Corel. These programs are such space hogs I'd really like to get rid of the old one.

You shouldn't have to uninstall Corel first but I don't know how it catalogs images so double check that before you remove it. Also, save your self HOURS of frustration and read this quick article that explains how LR handles XMP files. Just know the difference and make up your own mind. If you ever loose your catalogue you'll be glad you did.
