The rim question before this oe made me onder - the 29 gallon tank I was given this weekend has a cracked top rim. Is this a potential disaster? Is there a way to get a replacement? I did fill the tank esssentailly to the top, no leaks.

If that is the 30 inch long, 18 inches high tank, it doesn't have a cross brace. Is that the one? If so, the rim can't be doing much other than protecting the top edges of the glass from hard knocks that would shatter it. I don't think it would matter if you removed that rim entirely. The tanks I would get nervous about are the ones that usually have a cross brace on top.
