This is my first try at a small planted tank. This is your standard 3 gallon JBJ picotope. The pictures are a collection from start to about 2 weeks ago. I have not taken any new pics yet but the HC is starting to spread slowly.

Lighting: 27W desk lamp (initially used the 9W stock fixture)
Filter: stock picotope filter
Substrate: Charcoal SMS
Other stuff: No CO2, Excel only
Current Plants: HC, riccia, ludwigia r., rotala r., hair grass, water sprite, blyxia j.
Removed Plants: Glosso, Microsword

Look like you try to do IWAGUMI right? Nice setup and well place with the stone.
Nice setup! I just got a 3gal JBJ picotope started....im waiting on a different light fixture as well!

Is that "ball" of riccia just there wrapped up in a shower puff ball netting? or is there a rock in the netting also? What weighs it down?

Thanks, and keep up the great work!
Thanks! There's a small piece of elongated pebble inside that ball of riccia, about an inch long and half inch wide. I've trimmed it once already and it looks like it might need another one soon. I'll try and post another pic soon. I originally posted this in our local forum at AAPE.

The rocks I used are just from the front yard, nothing fancy :)
Looks good! I look forward to more pics! I had the same problem with the light working as a "siphon" as stated in your link to the AAPE forum:icon_roll

I did the opposite and took the water out....now when I get home, I will experiment and try to get more water in there!

Thanks!
You should give the home depot desk lamp a try. It has the right kind of spectrum and isn't that bad of a price either. Now I can fill the tank to the rim and not worry about a mini-flood because of the fixture.

Do you have a pic of that lamp.
desk lamp

Here's a crappy shot of the lamp and pico that I took with my cellphone camera.
Wow that's a cool lamp. Do you have good grow with plants?
Yeah, pretty good growth. I have to trim the rotala and ludwigia once every two weeks almost. The HC is responding to it well also... slowly but surely. I can see it rooting now.
I got a pair of that same lamp from Costco up here in Canada. They work great! I believe they are 6500K 26Watt bulbs or something close to that.

I have great growth in my 7.5 gallon tank. I used to have 2 of them on it but that was way too much light.

Love the aquascaping, it sure doesn't look like 3G the way you aquascaped it, great job :)
I have that same light. It's on temporary duty on my desk right now. WHen I get the need I'll put it over another aquarium though.

Pico looks nice!
