Today, I noticed that one of my dwarf swords had a stick-like growth heading vertically out of it... is this a runner, or a flower, or both...?

It is a flower stalk that may or may not actually flower underwater. Each node will likely grow one or more plants as well. That is a nice plant and you are going to have more of them!

Hopefully it does! As well, great! It's a great plant, I have 3 of them as it stands, and if all goes right, at least 5 more are on the way (there is 5 nodes as of this morning). Thanks for the response!

There are no flowers so far, but there is a few plants developing

How long did you have this plant before it started spiking?

Oh, and if you're interested (you asked how long it took, so I assume you have one), the specs for my tank are: Diy Co2, 48'' dual T8 6500k in a diamond plated fixture, dirted with added red clay, capped with fluorite, gets dry dosed fertilizers, and the tank is 55 gallons.
