Amano Up Close

Just a quick pic of one of my cleaning crew up close and personal! I haven't had any experience with Amano shrimp. Does this one look healthy and how long do they live? They are awesome algae eaters that's for sure! They've cleaned off my HC after only two days...

If they overpopulate, I'll be happy to take some off your hands! Good lookin shrimp!

That is a good looking healthy male!
They can live a long time, I have some for 2 yrs+.

Unfortunately, the larvae need salt water to develop... so no babies unless you go through some major troubles.
since you are new to Amanos, let me point out that they are escape artists, so plan your tank plumbing and top accordingly.
thanks!

Thanks everyone for the info. I was concerned about them escaping from day one and I'm still not too certain about them. They swim around and are very active during the daytime (enough so that I wonder if they might not jump out at any moment) but I've given up on trying to watch them. They seem to be content and so hopefully I won't lose any!

I found an exoskeleton recently. Does that mean that they are doing well? I can only conclude that based on increased growth that at least one has shed so maybe that suggests that they're being well fed? I wish that they bred like cherries without the morphology and simply came out as miniature larvae in fresh water!
Great photo... and ditto on the escape artist thing. They have a tendency to just "disappear" and turn up as shrimp jerky a day or two later.
I've kept amanos for a while. The one in your picture looks exactly like mine. They bow their bodies like that when trying to scrape algae off a surface.

FYI - these are difficult to breed, they're not like cherry reds or anything like that. The larvae need to be raised in salt water and then moved back to freshwater.
Mine were lost for like a month. Then it came back. Strange creatures. And endler did this to me too but came back with battle scars.

One of my CRS disappeared for like 2 weeks then came back as chopped colorful meat :-( later.
Thanks for the picture. The shrimp will try to escape if the water is not to their liking (new change/foul).

Yes, I know I've noticed that...in a previous tank where the chemistry wasn't right, they literally tried to jump out! Of course I've since learned my lesson...I'm wondering how sensitive are Amanos to temperature fluctuations?

They would be about as sensitive as maybe fish are. However, they seem to be the most hardy shrimp I know.

Ok, thanks!
