Amano shrimp tankmates?

7065 Views 8 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Mattb126
I'm curious as to whether or not amano shrimp would be okay with angelfish and a gourami?

I have 3 angels and a blue gourami in my 55 as well as some different tetras that I know are safe. I've read conflicting info about Amanos with angels, so I would appreciate some further opinions.

Thanks!

*Put this in general forum, because I wasn't sure if it would go under fish or invertebrates.

I know they are DEF. Ok with gourami's! pretty sure angelfish would be fine as well, they are more of a medium to top level fish...

Thanks! Now I just have to find somewhere that carries them...

online or locally?

Local, I have a PetSmart (actually has well maintained fish) as well as a pet supermarket (also nice fish section) but I've never seen either one carry Amanos...

I know Amanos are tough, but I'm not sure they'd be able to stand up to an adult angel, like I've seen them stand up to tetras. That being said, angels really do have individual personalities. You may have ones that just don't care about eating shrimp. In that case, maybe the shrimp could survive, but I think they would be in hiding quite a bit.

I picked some up a few years ago, and thought they were dead, soon after introducing them, because I didn't see them anytime after a few days of them in the tank. A couple of months later, I found all three, cowering in a little driftwood nook. They managed to stay away from the then two adult angels, but it didn't seem like much of a life.
How much do Amanos usually sell for?

If they aren't too bad I might get 1 or 2 and see how they fare in my tank, and then add more.

I have kept amanos and angels together successfully. Similar to the post above. I bought the amanos pretty small, turned off all lights and introduced them into the tank (after acclimating them) by bringing the net all the way down and into some plants so they could safely enter the tank. I assumed they all were eaten as i didnt see them for a good month or so. Then all of a sudden i saw all 12, 5x bigger than when i had bought them. They are now out in the open all the time and dont seem to care about the angels and the angels dont seem to care either

Cool! This intrigues me even more now, knowing it can be done.

Would it be a good idea to try throwing in some ghost shrimp and seeing how they do, and then try Amanos?
