Amano filter feeding

I've been adding some Repashy food powder to a breeder net in my 50 gal to feed fry, and quite a bit of it drifts into the main tank - today I noticed that at least three of my amanos have figured out how to eat this microfood.

This may be old news to some of you veteran shrimpers, but I had no idea amanos did this - who needs expensive bamboo shrimp! lol

That's not exactly filter feeding, they just use their claws to grab food. They'd need fan like legs to be able to filter feed.
Yeah, they're not filter feeding; they're just getting lucky and grabbing a piece as it comes by. That takes some skill though, as I imagine those pieces of food are really small. But Amanos are the biggest shrimp pigs I've ever seen, so it doesn't surprise me that they have exploited another food source.

They aren't actively grabbing the food - they're actually just passively sitting there with their main grabbing *claws* (I'm sure that's not the correct term) open then holding still and waiting - as soon as a piece of food hits their open claw then they close it and stick in in their mouth.

Since they don't have filter fans I suppose you could say they technically can't "filter" their food out of the water - but they are using their claws just like bamboos use their fans. That's the part I found cool.
Amanos will do anything to eat whatever you put in the tank! :hihi:
Haha, they're such pigs.

I like it though because I can drop food in the tank without worrying about it fouling my tank.
looks to me like it's just strecting it's stomach...lol
