I trimmed the roots of my Anubias nana petite and it really improved their appearance (they didn't have all these roots sticking out). I had heard somewhere to do that. They did fine with it.
I always let them be.
Eventually the roots will get a hold to whatever is on and create beardy wild look (as in a huge ficus benjamina tree), I'd say it is pleasant to look at.
