Hiyas,

I'm getting some akadama soil for a tank that I want to keep some tiger shrimp.
I read that akadama is an active soil. What does it alter ?

I'm getting the soil from a local bonsai tree place. ;)

Thanks,
Dead Can Dance.

the akadama that was used in tanks was double red line. from my knowledge it has not been found in the use in a while. other types have but not the double red line. most buffering substrates bring down ph and help hold it 0kh stable so there are no swings. i would look up older post cause i want to say it didnt last long and broke down with in a year maybe? depending on what kind of tiger shrimp you keep and your parameters you might not need a buffering/active substrate. i found with my oebt and red tigers they did better at a 7.2ish ph and little higher gh and kh than what a buffer would have them

My drl is going on year 2 and still going strong. But Wicca is right it will drop the ph below what tigers like. And like Wicca said not just any will work, most mush. Drl was the only one to hold up over time
