This depends on the type of plants you keep. For aquatic plants, the added surface movement will drive off carbon dioxide, which is an important nutrient. So, the air stone wouldn't be good for aquatic plants. If you're like some tank keepers, who like to use house plants in their fish tanks, then placing an air stone under the plant roots, adds oxygen to the root system and the plants will grow better.
