had 1 cory die every time i dosed excel and leaf zone. i stopped doseing both for 2 weeks and no fish died. this is a cory only tank.
then i started the flourish excel on a 2 small caps every 2 days dilluted in 2 gallon jug. all ok no dead fish.
last night dosed 20 ml of leaf zone, dilluted in a cup and spead around tank with a maxijet 1200 so no ferts. just drop stait down on a fish (thought that was my issue, because i sued to pour it strait in by my filters outlet)
and this morning low and behold a dead cory.
no signs of anything. no bloating, colors fine. no distress last night. they just die.
so i think its the leaf zone. but what do you all think?
oh yea

How big is the tank? You're dosing excel for like a 100 gallon tank. Read the label. The cap of the bottle has got to be over 5 milliliters. That would be the daily dose for a 50 gallon.

Edit: just read your signature; you are dozing over 2.5 times what rhe dosage is for your 40 gallon. It's no wonder your cories are dying. Not to mention that you appear to be using excel and leaf zone in conjunction, with both being over dosed. Sometimes we all learn the hard way... Sorry about your loss.

ok, i followed the directions on the bottle. the excel is the smaller bottle. it says 5ml = 1 cap for every 10 gallons of water. and same for the leaf zone. both are at 5ml for 10 gallons. i put in the exact amount of both. so still lost. maybee ill try half doses of both twice a week or every week.

For Excel, 5ml per 10G is the recommended initial dose. After that, the regular dose is 1ml per 10G, daily.

Excel is a dosage dependent toxin. As the dosage is increased, it starts killing more complex organisms. At normal dosage, it's safe to all but particular plants. At 2X overdose, it will kill some algae. At 3X, it will kill lots of algae, but starts to put sensitive critters at risk, like shrimp, and possibly cories.

If you're dosing 10ml in 40G every two days, that works out to a 2.5X overdose over time.

But Excel doesn't last long in an aquarium. Most say a day or less. Looking at it that way, you're doing a 5X overdose every two days. That puts everything at risk.

I don't even use the initial dose for this reason, and always use the regular dose (1ml per 10G daily) instead, just to be safe.

Re-read the Excel instructions carefully. I do recall another person who was dosing too much, and was also using the smallest bottle. It may be possible the instructions are shortened, and therefore incorrect, on that size bottle; and I'd be interested to know if that's the case.

I haven't used Leafzone. Seems to contain iron and potassium only. No harm in using it along with Excel, as both perform different functions. But the dosage is 5ml per 20G weekly. So you're double dosing that too, maybe more if you dose more than once a week.
