is it useful or important?Personally I consider it a worthless feature, unless you like seeing all the bubbles in your tank.
I think this idea took hold when power heads were new, and replacing air stones and the air stones used on undergravel filters. People just couldn't seem to get use to the idea that water circulation was the key to gas exchange, not the air bubbles. So, the "feature" was added.

Worthless except in one specialized use.
Reduces the water flow through the PH.
No need for air bubbles in the tank when the PH (w/o venturi hooked up) provides the water movement you want.
The highly specialized use? I have a self-starting siphon that does not always self start. When the venturi is working right it provides just enough suction to start the siphon. Does not always work, though.
