I want to increase the depth of the sand capping on my substrate . If I add sand will it leach out ammonia and kill my fish?

This is a dirted tank . Now when I think of it I might as well like to add some dirt too before I go on to cap it with sand . I have 6 red eye Tetras and 5 danios in there. Can someone please help me with this issue ? How should I go about it? Without harming the fish. I have some hardy plants too that I woukd be planting right away and good lights to go with them.

I heard people freeze the dirt with ice cubes and insert under the cap. Then just add sand over the top

All you can do is add more sand. The sand is inert and doesn't leech anything.

To add more soil you will have to tear down the tank. The soil will leech ammonia.

Thanks. But I added grey river sand to my mini pond and then added the mollies I had ..they all jumped out and committed suicide. Not one Molly survived !
