Hi, I'm new to aqua planting and used to keep fancy goldfish for years in bare tanks. So I have 0 experience and just starting up.

I'm planting a 29g tank with 40w lighting (will upgrade).

I already added gravel mixed with Sera Floredepot and filled the tank with water, but after checking set ups here I don't find it that appealing as the gravel is big in size and light colored.

Now I really want to add finer black substrate for a better appearance, is it ok to just pour it on top of what I have now (filled with water)? Or am I supposed to completely start over?

Sorry if the question is stupid but I don't want to mess up and regret not asking.

the larger substrate will eventually settle on top and the finer one will sink to the bottom

Thanks for letting me know Storm_Rider, I guess for the mean time I'll just deal with what I have. Now I'm considering dwarf hair grass or any carpet plant once I upgrade the lighting so hopefully it won't be visible then.
