Adding new shrimp

Hello all,

I searched the forums for something on this subject but didn't really get any good results so here I am!! I have read that when adding new shrimp to a tank can cause massive die offs due to "different bacteria". I am in need of adding amano shrimp to my tank as I am getting overrun with clado but don't want my precious fire reds to be harmed!

Unfortunately the only place that carries Amano shrimp is somewhat suspect in my opinion. The tanks that they keep the shrimp in always has dead fish and blue green algae. The only good news is that they have very low turn over on shrimp so the ones there have probably been there for months. Would you risk adding sketchy shrimp to your tank or would you just live with the clado invading your moss and destroying your soul?

Ok so for you situation, I would have a separate tank to isolate your new shrimps. Leave them in there for a week and monitor them. If everything looks fine then I'd put those amano's in your tank.
Another perspective is that invertebrates are generally more sensative to disease and dirty water, moreso than fish or other aquatic livestock. Amanos are hardier than all dwarf shrimp. Any signs of bacterial disease is visible by cloudy milkiness in their body. i'd avoid those cloudy looking shrimp if possible. Apart from that, you can also pickup one shrimp at a time, see how it goes and get another the following week just to stagger the impact. Your firereds are neos and they have been proven to be bulletproof. i'd be more concerned if they were any tibees or tigers... now those guys are real sensative...

Thanks for the advice

I will probably pick up one at a time and see how they do. I know neos are hardy but I think I would cry if they died because I did something dumb! These are my first shrimp so I want to make sure I dont mess up.
Of course this LFS doesnt have any amanos in and "doesnt know when they are getting some...check back on tuesdays".

Man I hate that place.
