Thanks Greggz, that tank was a year in the making so really pumped about it,they are doing great so far, just added 7 sterbai cory's and they disappeared into the plants so have to wait for them to settle down and in about a month when I am sure all is well I will add about 25 cardinal tetras and that should be it...

Good luck at the new job..
thank you!

Blackheart kudos and good luck with the new Job. Have you though about doing a larger scale walstad tank?
Thanks! Yeah I thought about it, but whenever I think about how much of a huge mess it could possibly be it changes my mind.

If anyone's interested, I'm trying to sell my Aquaticlife 48 inch dual T5HO fixture. I had it a stored away ever since I started using my Current USA Satellite LED fixture. Just don't need it anymore.

I'm also considering moving to a 40 breeder at the current dpg sale from Petco. I probably won't though. I still love the 55 I have now and how I can watch the schools of fish swim from one side to the other in such a long tank.

Update on my 20 long, added some Hygrophila corymbosa angustifolia that was originally in my 60g. They looked unsightly in the 60g because the lower ends of the stems had lost their leaves, so i trimmed them all to the same length and put them in the 20g. Second pic shows all my inhabitants: Boraras brigittae, Boraras uropthalmoides, and Neon Tetras.

Hello Michiganders!

My name is Shirley and I am a newbie here, and though I've had community fish tanks on and off, I never realize how many factors go into doing them properly! I'm trying to learn all I can 'cause I want my tanks to be as beautiful and successful as those I've seen here.

I retired from teaching in the Detroit area last year, and moved to Holland, on the West side of MI. I don't have any pictures right now, but will get some soon.

Nice to know there are lots of MI people on this site.

Muskegon here. Replanting my tank tonight switching out from gravel to Eco complete and fingers crossed it will be an easy transition. Helping the roomie with his tank. He just switched from a 55 to a 125gal. I feel like it takes up half the living room but I'm excited. He is doing sand in the new one and clown loaches bala shark electric blue acara and tiger barbs. Trying to encourage him to do some low light low Tech plants.

Another update on the 20 gallon long. Just brought home a 30" finnex stingray, and I already like it better than the T5. The stingray cost about the same as the T5 fixture cost originally, uses less energy, puts out more light and I wont have to replace bulbs every 8 months. Both my tanks are LEDs now, and I think they're worth the money. Don't plan on going back.
Also, did a slight rescape. Thoughts?

Keep us updated on how the Finnex work out. I'm using dual t5HO but considered switching. Have had a series of unfortunate events....diatom killed most of my plants after switching substrates, and then a cracked heater killed 3 of my favorite fish. Hoping things start heading in the right direction soon

I'd say 59 pages and 872 posts is a pretty strong life for a local sub forum! Sorry to see it dwindle, maybe folks are posting in more specialized sub forums? Like lighting, their journals, fish, plants, DIY, etc. I'm sure a lot of original members from the 2013- early posts aren't around anymore either. The bumps should help with new recruits, hopefully.
I'll admit, I'm a little envious that y'all have so many local folks around. The most posts in the local VA forum in a single thread is 39!

Hey Michiganders,

After a long break from the forum I'm back. Figured I'd poke my head into the local forum and see what's shaking. Just got back into restarting breeding projects for my danio species, found that my population of Danio margaritatus was a little too low for my liking. Just pulled the adults from the breeding tank, there are a bunch of eggs below the egg grate. Picked up some wild caught Danio choprae from a lfs that look fantastic, hoping to get some into the breeding tank once they're conditioned and the current residents in the tank hatch/grow.

Those choprae are pretty nice looking. I almost went with a bunch but worried about them munching shrimp if I ever get a colony going. I picked up a school of ember tetra instead. I also have 6 CPDs in the tank with some threadfin rainbows, otos and kuhlis.

Curious where everyone goes to get their plants. LFS stores cost a fortune and really only carry basic plants. I love Blue Fish but the plants are usually gone as fast as they come in. Preuss in Lansing is great but it's a pretty long drive for me. Anyone have much luck online plant shopping?

club meetings and other club members or I order online. ButteredScrimp is a good guy on reddit for less exotic stuff. love bluefish and water colors in GR and we are lucky to have such great stores in our area. but man I just can't afford to get a ton from there unless I need it now

I'm not far from Preuss, but the freshwater plants are pretty much run of the mill stuff. I do quite a bit of buying on Aquabid, the key is to know what you want and review seller feedback very carefully. I have also had great luck with the sellers on this forum.
