A lot of people suggest rummynose tetras for tight schooling, so you may want to look them up.

i thought there minimum gallons was 29 though. how many could go in a 10 gal
None. There's not enough space for a school of them. I really like ember tetras. 6 are perfect for a 10 gallon. I'm voting for them. I also have CPDs.
I would do Espei rasboras as they will fit in a ten gallon and look ver good. Some people say that they do not school very well but mine are very good schoolers. Just provide plenty of cover.
could u have glow light tetras?

I had the same question about this topic. The following thread will help you:

* This is about schooling fish in general:

I have 8 embers in a 5.5g. They school very tightly, but if they get spooked, for a couple days after, it'll look like you have a fishless fishtank. Personally, I think you could get ~15 for the 10g. My tank is overfiltered and very heavily planted, though.
I just got some pygmy corys and they school pretty good. I put 3 of them in a 5 gallon tank with 7 cpd's. I think I dare put in 3 more pygmys but that would be it.
I have 7 espei rasboras in a 10 gallon. They do a pretty good job of sticking together considering it is a small tank and they have no predators. They've got great color, too!
I got some GREEN neon tetras supposed to stay around an inch I have 12 in a ten gal now and as soon as I walk in the room they school and stay that way until i leave
I loved my harlequin rasboras when I had them years ago in my 30 gal. However, I don't think I would recommend them for a 10 gal- once they reach full size they will be large enough that they probably won't bother to school in a tank as small as 10 gal.

I would definitely recommend any of the Boraras has an alternative: chili rasboras, strawberry rasboras or maculata rasboras. They will also make your 10 gal appear much smaller since they are so tiny.
i have 20 ember rasboras in one tank and 20 cardinals in another. I think personally the embers shoal together more often and nicer looking. But the cardinals pop a lot more because of how shiny they are.
I find that most tetra dont school very tightly until you get a dozen of them together in a tank at least 55 gallons. But I have kept small schools of neons, harlequin rasboras, and glo light tetra in 10 gallon tanks. I do 6 of them for a 10 gallon.
I think your best bet would be to go with Embers! They do a fine job of schooling in a smaller aquarium ;-)
in all the names of schooling fish above people suggested, which one of those grows the smallest. is it still the ember tetra?
green neons ! They're smaller than cardinals, and look really good.
What about chili rasboras?
i have 10 of those in my 11.4g and they school/shoal/swim together for the most part.
