55 gal planted dirt tank fish advice

1709 Views 29 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Tankinho
Hello,

I did some of research and am thinking about this combination of fish in these numbers. I would like any advice or opinions on this mixture:

Revised list
Neon green rasboras 10 (perhaps replace)
Cardinal tetra 13
Glow light danio 18
Pygmy Cory 15
Otocinclus - 7

Im afraid that there are way to many fish. I want the tank to be heavily planted. F any of you feel I should replace or delete certain fish please let me know.

On your schooling fish I believe you will be happier if you pick one kind and have a big school. As far as the number of fish, I think you could easily support that number of small fish.

Are diamond tetras considered small fish?

Been thinking about putting a school of diamond tetras in my 55. With some Cory's. And maybe a farowella or two.

I'm thinking about replacing the threadfin rainbow with diamond or tetras

I'd get something that swims a bit lower to prevent crowding of the top layers, maybe something like glowlight tetras.
Aren't corys low swimming?

They swim on the ground, the glowlight tetras swim in the layer from the ground up to about midway, but almost always in the bottom third of the tank.
I'd drop the rainbows and rasboras too and stick to the South American fish in a biotope arrangement. It is easier to provide optimum conditions for fish from 1 geographic area.

My pygmy cories have never stuck to the bottom of the tank, they go all over. They're particularly fond of perching on my plants. Cute little buggers, I would get a bigger school to give them more of a presence in the tank though - they're so tiny! I have a school of 10 in my 20 gal and they're hard to spot sometimes, they would probably get lost in a 55.

As far as the rest of your stocking, I'd say you should be fine. If that's the stocking plan that makes you happy, go for it - they're all fairly small fish and a well-cycled 55 should be able to handle it.
Yes, pygmies imitate similar looking fish...
I wish i could find such nice collection of fishes in my country :(
Start looking at local fish, there are very few things that feel as rewarding in this hobby as keeping local species.

Many of the tetras you can just buy a male a female, get an extra 45litre tank, and breed your own school
In response to the first question, those are all tiny fish and you definitely aren't overstocking the tank. I have some of the same fish (plus more) in my 33 long. That being said, I agree with the other poster that you will likely be happier with a bigger school of one or two of those fish vs. smaller schools. I did a bunch of different types in my 33 and wish I hadn't as they all just get jumbled together. A large school of one type with a couple accent fish or something would have been much more impressive looking.

All that said, I would not put diamonds with any of those fish. Diamonds get to be pretty decent sized compared to the other fish on your list, and they are VERY aggressive eaters. I tried to mix mine with glowlight danios and ended up moving the diamonds to another tank because the danios weren't big enough or rambunctious enough to compete with the diamonds for food. They are peaceful fish on the whole in my experience, but mixing them with smaller fish, especially smaller fish that feed at the surface (like the danios) isn't a great idea.

Thank you, i saw the aquarium co op and Rachael O'Leary's videos on green rasboras and apparently they tolerate a wide range of temperatures and water hardness. I just think they look so cool. Lol

I know, it's more a pet peeve. No reason you should not try them if you like them.

Lol it may be a noob thing to do lol. But honestly the idea of having a tank again makes me feel like I'm a teenager again. It sounds corny I know, but even online I'm like a kid in a candy store reading about fish and equipment. Lol

Is your tank planted? How often and how big of a water change do you do? Thank you for all your input! :)
