Hi everyone,
I'm in the process of setting up a new 40b (36 long" x18"wide x16" tall), it's an upgrade from my 29gallon. Anyway, I still have a Finnex Ray2 that I used on my 29g, the problem is that it's only 30" long (and actually the LEDs underneath are more like 24" long). I could use it, but would prefer better light spread.

Whatever LED I go with instead would need to give me high light (I've got Co2, ADA Amazonia, and will be doing EI dosing) even light coverage, and preferably better color than the washed out Ray2 look--I wouldn't mind actually seeing the red in my red plants!

I've considered various store bought fixtures (planted+ 24/7--which I can't even get in Canada, sat. plus pro), but was wondering about people's experiences with LED Par38s. There are about a million options... Do you have good suggestions for me that are: a. reasonably priced (I don't want Kessil or something that expensive) b. would give great color c. might be available on ebay or amazon? Incidentally, how many do you think would be sufficient for good light coverage (no shadows)? 2? 3?
thanks

You will hit 60'ish par+ at substrate with one of these. Best $ per par you will get and they are good lights. This will give you plenty of coverage. 2 will of course double your par. I would get two for high light and you will not find a better price for $ per par.

3 of these about 3ft (yes feet) off the waterline should do nicely for color..About a 16" radius circle /bulb..
Might be able to get away w/ 2...
Vivid Med Base PAR38 18.5W 120V 9 Deg 5000K 95CRI by Soraa | SP38-18-09D-950-03

Main reason for mentioning this one (the store that is) in particular is 1)fairly powerful and 2)great color rendering 3)sort of dirt cheap closeout price..

Par ranges from 20, 40 or 60 depending on 2, 1, or 0 layers of screen:
