I have run UGF systems on tanks up to about 45 gallons.
It takes a pretty strong flow of water to run this large a grid. If you are trying to keep the flow a bit less you might get 2 small power heads, and put one on the top of each tube, one about 1/4-1/3 of the way from the left, the other a similar distance from the right. If there are no holes in these locations, then go ahead and try one PH in each corner. For a 40 gallon tank, you might try 2 PH rated for 100 gph or a bit more.

Make sure you keep the gravel clean. These systems will grow a good bed of bacteria, but they do need a high oxygen flow.

Oh wow, I was not expecting such large a flow requirement. I recently just got all the equipment to run without an ugf setup then was wanting to try an ugf. I guess this run may not include that.

I took a picture of the pvc I was trying to run. Excuse the air setup, I was just curious if I could fit an air stone I had lying around.

Here is a pic of what I got under my 40g bow front. Its air line tubing and 3/4 inch pvc fittings. I put a layer of very fine polyester material on top of the ugf before adding the media

What is the goal of the UGF?
A planted tank usually uses a finer substrate than works well with UGF.
Roots of thriving plants add oxygen to the soil so anaerobic areas are minimized.
Plants are part of the bio filter. Any filter media (sponge, floss, bio media) in a canister, HOB or sump will grow enough bacteria to keep the ammonia under control.
